Our Business

Onyx Projects is a privately owned company established in 2007. Its four founding directors have a combined experience of more than 100 years delivering greenfield and brownfield projects in mining and minerals processing, iron and steel, petrochemicals, oil refining, chemicals, manufacturing and water treatment facilities in Asia, Australasia, Europe, North America and South America.

This experience has been gained in both operating and engineering/construction company environments.

Ian Beaumont

Managing Director

B.Eng (Hons) (Mechanical Engineering), C.Eng MIMechE (UK)

Ian is a chartered mechanical engineer with over 20 years of experience gained in the mining, petrochemical, water, waste treatment, and iron and steel industries.  Ian’s roles and responsibilities have included project management, management of feasibility studies, engineering management, equipment specification/procurement and the supervision of construction and commissioning activities.

Ian’s recent key roles include Engineering Manager – Brownfields Mine Expansion Project (AUD300 million), Perth, WA; Area Manager – HIsmelt Project (AUD400 million), Kwinana, WA; and Chief Mechanical/Piping Engineer, Aker Kvaerner Stockton, UK.

Rob McGregor


MEng (Electrical and Electronic Engineering), MIEAust CPEng

Rob is a chartered control systems engineer with over 25 years of experience, including 10 years site based brownfield project and operations experience on major petrochemical and oil refining facilities in the UK and Europe.

Rob’s recent key roles include Lead Engineer roles on Boddington Gold Mine Expansion Project (AUD1.8 billion), Perth, WA; Rio Tinto Brownfields Mine Expansion Project (AUD300 million); HIsmelt Project (AUD400 million), Kwinana, WA; and Olympic Dam Expansion Project (AUD2 billion), Adelaide and Roxby Downs, SA.

Robert Loiacono


BEng (Civil Engineering), MIEAust CPEng

Robert is a chartered civil/structural engineer with over 25 years experience in the design of materials handling and oil and gas facilities, with a lead role in the development of projects in Australia, South East Asia and The Middle East.

Robert’s recent key roles include General Manager – Rio Tinto Project Engineering Group projects, Senior Design Project Engineer – Beenyup Waste Water Treatment Plant (AUD60 million), Study Manager – Western Turner Syncline Preliminary Engineering Study, Study Manager – Marandoo Mine Phase 2 Preliminary Engineering Study, Lead Civil/Structural Engineer – Hope Downs Project (AUD400 million), Lead Civil/Structural Engineer – HIsmelt Project (AUD400 million).

Chris Grierson

Chris is a mechanical engineer with over 15 years experience in the mining, metals, chemicals and waste water treatment industries.  Chris’ roles and responsibilities have included maintenance planning, equipment specification and procurement, construction supervision and plant area engineering management.

Chris’ recent key roles include Product Development Team Area Manager (Wet Plant) – Karara Iron Ore Project (value of area under management: AUD500 million), Senior Design Project Engineer – Woodman Point Waste Water Treatment Plant Upgrade (AUD100 million), Area Project Manager – Brockman 4 Iron Ore Project (value of area under management: AUD150 million), and Area Project Engineer – Rio Tinto Brownfields Mine Expansion Project (AUD300 million).
